Entry-Level Credit Risk Training Program for Financial Analysts

 

The Credit Risk Training Program is a 7-module, 14 day program that teaches entry level bankers how to analyze and understand credit risk, interpret historical financial performance, build financial projections & valuations and write effective credit approval documents.

The discreet, yet integrated, modules can be delivered as a set or on an individual basis. Each session combines lecture material with Harvard Business School and Herter Associates developed cases.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
 

MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION TO FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING

 

1 DAY
Participants learn the basics of financial accounting theory and methodology, including: key accounting principles, journal entries, and construction of financial statements. Participants also learn how to account for inventories, receivables, plant assets, and liabilities.

MODULE 2: FUNDAMENTALS OF CREDIT ANALYSIS

 

3 DAYS
Participants develop skills necessary to determine the creditworthiness of a commercial borrower, including: borrowing causes and sources of repayment, business, industry & strategy analysis, calculation of key ratios, and construction of an indirect and direct cash flow statement.

MODULE 3: FORECASTING, LOAN STRUCTURING, & LENDING TECHNIQUES

 

2 DAYS
Participants learn how to construct financial models based on logical assumptions given industry dynamics and historical performance. Participants are introduced to loan structuring, including: types of facilities, covenants, defaults, and remedies.

MODULE 4: CORPORATE FINANCE FUNDAMENTALS

 

2 DAYS
Participants learn about time value of money and how management makes investment decisions. Participants will also learn valuation techniques, including: enterprise value, equity value, and discounted cash flow analysis.

MODULE 5: PERSONAL FINANCIAL STATEMENTS & TAX RETURN ANALYSIS

 

2 DAYS
Participants learn how to use personal financial statements and tax returns to assess the strength of a guarantor. Participants will also learn how to analyze tax returns for different types of corporate entities in order to generate a consolidated snapshot of related companies with common ownership.

MODULE 6: BUSINESS WRITING & CREDIT MEMORANDA

 

2 DAYS
Participants acquire the basic skills to write memos that are clear, interesting, concise, diplomatic, and convincing. Day 1 focuses on building writing skills; Day 2 focuses on writing credit memoranda.

MODULE 7: ADVANCED CREDIT SKILLS

 

2 DAYS
Participants learn how to proactively manage deteriorating credit with the dual objectives of preserving a sound relationship with the client while protecting the bank’s capital. Participants also learn how to detect early warning signs of deterioration and actions to protect the bank.
